Pole Theatre USA 2016
For Pole Theatre USA, I competed (and won!!!!) the pole comedy semi-pro division. Having grown up Mormon, I spent a lot of my teens/early 20s feeling guilt, shame, confusion and embarrassment about my own sexuality. I wanted to tell a story that captured the essence of those feelings but I also didn't want people to feel sorry for me so the comedy aspect was important to me. There were a lot of unknowns while I built this routine - logistical ones, how will I get a belly on and off? How will I represent a religiously patriarchal belief about God's/man's ownership over a women's body? How do I make all of that uncomfortable and funny without being too dark? The only way to go about creating the piece was to jump into the dark hole of the creative process. While this piece ended up being a bit controversial, I'm really happy with how it came out.
